European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
