Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

This wider security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
