Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
