Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
